In April 2025, the Chinese government introduced strict new regulations on the export of rare earth elements like dysprosium (Dy), terbium (Tb), samarium (Sm), and others. These elements are essential for high-performance neodymium magnets, especially those used in high-temperature environments. Now, magnets containing these materials require a special export license from the Ministry of Commerce of China, making global supply chains more unpredictable.
All neodymium (NdFeB) magnets containing Dy or Tb are now considered dual-use items (civilian and military applications) and require extensive documentation to prove their end-use. As of April 4th:
Shipments from China are delayed due to license requirements.
Customs clearance is uncertain and may require extra documentation.
The licensing timeline is unknown, and shipments are on hold until clarified.
These restrictions affect not just high-performance magnets, but in many cases, standard NdFeB magnets as well.
If you depend on imported magnets for your products, your operations could face:
Unexpected production delays
Customs audits requiring proof of use
Inconsistent delivery timelines
Increased risk of supply chain breakdowns
